Great trip to the coast!

We just arrived home today from Wilmington....we were planning on coming in yesterday but discovered late Wednesday night---thanks to a nice lady who pulled along side us to let us know---that our tail lights were not working. So we decided to get those fixed Thursday and to wait to travel until today as it was raining yesterday. I'm glad that we waited as we had a great day yesterday....we finished scanning some photos that Linda had brought for us to look at from when the kids were younger and we played loaded questions after dinner. It was an awesome week. We enjoyed the ocean and sand and the company of family......Thorben hit it off well with Lauren and Brad and Tommy got to spend time with grandpa and Linda. My hubby has the most wonderful family.....and I love them dearly. Robin and Boyd were gone to Hati on a mission trip so we didn't get to see them but they did skype with the kids the last night we were there so we briefly introduced them to Thorben. We looked at pictures from when Tommy was young and Linda brought her wedding album to share. We went to the Life Center....which is part of their church and played pool and air hockey (me, Tommy, Thorben and Brad) and we watched a lot of baseball with grandpa. We went to Rucker John's on Thursday night for dinner...Thorben had a mushroom chicken dish, Brad and Tommy both had a sampler with ribs and BBQ chicken and I had prime rib....yummy! We went to Cracker Barrel for breakfast one day and Thorben got to try grits...he said they have something similar in Germany and that he liked them but they are not his favorite. He really liked the apples there. He loves juice (both apple and orange) and he has tried several of the flavors that go into the bottled water. I learned some things about him playing the loaded questions game. His favorite candy bar is 'Kit Kat' and his heros are his father and Harry Potter.....Laruen had us both laughing up a storm during game time and we had a blast.....Linda played with us and she is quite a hoot herself. We also went to Chris’ Cosmic Kitchen one day for breakfast and learned that they will be closing at the end of this month….kind of sad as it is a very good place to eat. They brought Thorben three of the biggest chocolate chip pancakes I have ever seen. They lasted him the rest of the week. Tommy had French toast and I had a western omlet. Lauren went with us that morning as she didn’t have a class. She ended up dropping her Tuesday/Thursday class so she is only part-time as there were many classes she wanted to take that were not available when she registered. Brad has a full schedule with Anatomy, Biology, Statistics and Chemistry…..sounds like a nightmare to me….lol. He’s a smart kid…he can handle it. It was so cool watching him being so responsible….making sure his sister was ready on time for school….doing household chores…..showing Linda where things were…..he has really grown into a very fine young man….very mature/very mature. I miss those kids already…..I wish we lived closer.:(

We got to witness Thorben’s amazing talent this week……a couple of days after Hairspray….Thorben and Brad were playing around with Brad’s keyboard…..and Thorben started playing some of the tunes from the show…..songs he had heard for the first time just a few days before…..we were all amazed at his gift! We gotta find this kid a piano!

Hairspray

We traveled to Wilmington today.....left early so we could get there in time to see the play.....Hairspray. It was AWESOME! I think Thorben really enjoyed it....and Lauren did also. There were some really gifted actors/singers in the performance.....and they let us take pics...so of course....I am sharing some. We saw Allison and Charles there....Christopher's ex-girlfriend was a stand-by in the play so they were hoping to see her perform.

Our first adventure!

After we picked Thorben up at the hotel, we headed to the Crawdad's game. It was an eventful night....the ZOOperstars were there for entertainment between innings and then there was fireworks after the game as well as a game called 'launch a ball' where fans purchased chances to throw tennis balls on the field after the game in an attempt to hit targets trying to win prizes. We had great seats....front row right behind the home dugout so we got some great pics.....and it was a really close game....only a late error by the catcher cost the Crawdad's the game. We called Conrad the Crawdad down for a pic with the boys late in the game only to find out that he was someone we know....David Keyes son....Geoffery.....a young man younger than Brad....SO cool! Tommy had gotten us this great deal so we all got hot dogs, drinks and fries for Thorben's first American dinner experience....with us anyway......the fireworks were beautiful and the kids were a blast to watch....it was a lot of fun!

It was kind of late when we finally got home but we briefly showed Thorben around his new home. We stayed up just a little and then went to sleep as we were all very tired.

Thorben Arrives

Our new family!
Carrie leading orientation
Taller than Brad!

Today we went to Charlotte to pick up Thorben (Torben). As our niece, Lauren, says....it makes sense....you don't say the 'h' in Thomas either.

We left the house in time to go by our favorite donation stop in Granite Falls (The Salvation Army Store).....where we dropped off some items and went in to look at a chair that Tommy had seen the day before....but it was gone....guess it was not the chair for us..:) Then we went to Wal-mart where we were going to purchase an item but found it to be about $11 more than it was online.....after a discussion with the manager we found we could order it online and have it sent to the store and save this $11 so we decided to take this route. We were going to go by the Family Christian Store in Hickory but we were running short on time and decided to head on to Charlotte.

When we got there.....Gretchen was leaving as she had been there......I guess since Thursday.....she said the kids were done with their orientation and were here and there but that most of them were pretty much wiped. We were one of only two families there that had hosted before and everyone else were first timers so the orientation was basically question and answer for them.

There was one lady...have no idea her name who make a suggestion about better communication between the liasions and the parents as she pointed out that last year most of the communication came between the AFS folks and the kids and even though they are great kids.....they are kids and sometimes things would get misinterpreted or not communicated at all which would cause problems....Frank said they were working on this problem. I was just glad to see that someone else saw this problem and was working on it. This lady also pointed out that there is an option of a pre-paid phone for $20 per month and you can get unlimited texting at AT&T.

The lady that led the training was really great....her name was Carrie something....wish I could remember....but she is very nice...she helped Brad and I get some ice for Thorben's insulin when we were getting ready to leave.

We met Thorben's friend's host parents right before Thorben came in....they live in Hickory. He has a host brother that will be attending Hickory high with him. There is also another German student that will be attending Hickory high also.

Thorben seems like a very sweet young man....he is very tall...taller than Brad.....and cute as a button. We did our greeting and took pics.....and then we were off.....our adventure begins!

Host Family Training

Today we finished our online host family orientation....I was hoping it would be a little different than what we went though last year but it was basically the same thing...it has some interesting points....I especially like the culturally adaptation part and what to expect....I am not sure I saw this pattern with Matheus but he was an exceptionally outgoing kid. I think it was really easy for him to make new friends and so maybe it was easier for him to adjust. I remember a conversation with him on the bus riding to the state fair where he shared with me that it was helpful to him talking to Felipe and Pedro and his friend in Washington as they are going through the same thing he is going through. Brad went through the training with us...he is such a neat kid.

Visiting with family

We came back home yesterday and we brought the Bradster with us.....YEAH.....I LOVE that kid....he is the SWEETEST! We stopped in Garner and saw Minnie and her family which was really nice. We had not seen her since her dear husband, Larry passed in late May/early June. They were married for 57 years....had two boys Allen & Rickey.

I didn't really realize until yesterday that neither one of her boys didn't have children. Rickey's wife, Phyllis has two boys from a previous marriage.....Justin and Steven. Steven is getting ready to leave a job as a police officer in Statesville that he has been doing for several years as he just got a job at the corporate offices for Lowes Hardware in Wilkesboro. His wife just had a baby....I think her name is Katerine.....a real cutie pie.

We got to see Allen & Angela just briefly as they were working on a project at their house and couldn't make it up there until right when we were leaving.....they all live right next to each other which is so cool....it was the first time we had ever been to their house....very nice place. It was GREAT seeing them. We shared with them about our year with Matheus....I hate they didn't get to meet him....and then details about Thorben...they were excited for us. We need to make an effort to connect Thorben with our family this coming year!
